Varifocal mirrors dramatically improve the focus and level of energy collected by the pyro sensor regardless of range. The electronic gain  of the detector is reduced and therefore the Signal to Noise ratio is optimized to virtually eliminate false alarms. This design also provides an improved freedom from false alarms with its unprecedented level of immunity against visible light.
